This went unnoticed, at least for a time. It wasn't like anyone was paying attention to the work-in-progress collage she kept in her bottom desk drawer, or the paper mache bust she was working on during art club when she sat in the back and kept her eyes downcast. Wasn't like anyone noticed that her contributions to the yearbook had one person in common. Wasn't like anyone really cared, since Kara Wilson was the weird kid.
Oh, don't give me that look. The I'm-a-good-person-and-you-should-be-ashamed-of-yourself frown.

The door, left slightly ajar, was an hesitant invitation. My eavesdropping ears strained to make out the tinkling of the keys, ebony and ivory mingling in the still Friday air. Light, melancholy notes flutter by, the beginning of Chopin piece I couldn't quite place. He came across a difficult part, paused, fingers struggling for purchase on the velvety black and white. The music slowed, dimmed. I couldn't help my eyes from closing, picturing his smile as he played the gentle notes. I felt uglier than ever in the midst of the music that surrounded me.
